Volkswagen emissions scandal: A timeline

Volkswagen said it will be able to post better-than-expected profits when it reports results next week, despite the costs and other problems associated with its diesel emissions scandal.

The company said it expects to earn 7.5 billion euros, or $8.3 billion, for the first six months of the year, before special items related to the scandal. And it said special charges in the period will come to only 2.2 billion euros, or $2.4 billion, far less than the 16 billion euros in charges it had previously set aside to deal with the costs.
