“I see Michael very often, and Michael is still fighting, and we must keep fighting with the family.”

A £10 million medical suite has been built at Schumacher’s home to give him 24-hour care, amid reports that the F1 legend has lost huge amounts of weight. Little more is known about his condition, with the family fiercely guarding their privacy.

A police and security presence is permanently stationed outside the 46-year-old’s home to prevent intrusions.

Todt said Lewis Hamilton’s recent triumph, winning a third drivers’ title, reminded him of how brilliant a driver Schumacher had been.

The 69-year-old added: “It was interesting last week after Lewis won the title for third time.

“You saw the figures [for Schumacher]. I was very proud of what Michael achieved. Sometimes you tend to forget what he did.”

Schumacher won seven drivers’ championships and 91 races in his career. His first two titles came with Benetton in 1994 and 1995, before a dominant run with Ferrari between 2000 and 2004.

After retiring at the end of 2006, the German returned to Formula One in 2010 with Mercedes. He endured three largely unsuccessful seasons before retiring for a second time.
