$242,950 gets you the best of German luxury
It is supposed to poach some customers from the likes of Bentley Flying Spur ($214,600) and Rolls-Royce Ghost ($314,400), and to do that, it’s been fitted with (a lot of) goodies from Stuttgart’s top shelf.
First up, the engine. Handcrafted, of course. The 6.0-liter biturbo V-12 cranks out 621 horsepower and 738 pound-feet of torque, enough to zap from naught to 60 mph in 4.6 seconds. But no, it won’t crack your kidneys in the process. Needless to say, power and torque reach the rear wheels via the silky-smooth 7G-Tronic Plus gearbox, and top speed is capped at 155 mph.
The S 650 Night Edition comes standard with Merc’s Magic Body Control suspension, so you won’t have to worry about bumps and potholes despite the fact that this whole thing sits on massive 20-inch wheels. Yeah, they’re fancy alright thanks to the smoked effect, but not too apt at soaking up road imperfections. The suspension, however, fixes that.
Then there’s the interior. For the Night Edition only, Mercedes-Maybach threw in the likes of Exclusive Nappa Leather upholstery, Night Edition leather floor mats, as well as carbon fiber deco bits and bobs that go hand in hand with the carbon fiber rear spoiler and Obsidian Black exterior paint.
That, however, is just the tip of the iceberg. Here’s what other goodies the special edition brings inside the cabin:
- executive rear seats with power calf rests
- 64-color ambient lighting
- leather-covered door sills
- wood/leather steering wheel
- Burmester 3D surround sound system
Final Word
With just 15 cars up for grabs, the 2020 Mercedes-Maybach S 650 Night Edition is poised to become sold out in no time. That’s because luxury sells even in times of economical turmoil and while the car world is saturated with special editions left, right, and center, few carmakers can really pull off such a limited run of vehicles like Mercedes-Benz or Mercedes-Maybach, for that matter.
