Despite the fact that we haven’t even began seeing pre-production prototypes or even mules for the upcoming Coupe variant of the C-Class, it seems that the Mercedes-AMG C63 Coupe may be set for an unveil as early as the fall of 2015, at least according to a recent report from Auto Express. Citing an unnamed Mercedes-Benz insider, who somehow decided to spill the beans to the British magazine at the Detroit Auto Show, Auto Express says that the C63 Coupe will be launched at the 2015 Frankfurt Auto Show in September.

So far, only prototypes of the first-ever C-Class Cabriolet have been caught on camera, despite the fact that its Coupe brother should essentially launch before it, as per Mercedes-Benz tradition. Either way, this would be the second generation of the C-Class Coupe and the second time that it receives an AMG variant as well. Compared with the first C63 AMG Coupe, the new model will get a different moniker, a new type of engine and will be much more differentiated from its sedan brother in terms of styling.

The new moniker will happen because of a recent change in naming strategy at AMG, with the future model’s full name to be “Mercedes-AMG C63 Coupe.” Also mucking up the name a little is the fact that its engine will no longer be the rumbling 6.2-liter V-8, but rather the new 4.0-liter, biturbo V-8 found in the 2015 C63 and C63 S sedan. Unlike the first generation, which was introduced as a quick after-thought in the lineup, the new C-Class Coupe will benefit from a highly distinctive look, in the same way that the S-Class Coupe is a bit more than just a two-door S-Class.

Exterior

If the gorgeous S-Class Coupe is any indication of how all the upcoming Mercedes-Benz coupes are going to look compared to their sedan brethren, than the new C-Class Coupe should be a stunner. Slimmer taillights and a more pronounced, angry look for the front end should result in a much more distinctive overall look that isn’t just a C-Class with two fewer doors. Naturally, for the time being, the model’s appearance can only be speculated, but judging from the proportions exhibited by the pre-production prototypes of its convertible variant, there shouldn’t be any nasty surprises in that department.

The Mercedes-AMG C 63 Coupe should come with an A-shaped front bumper that is not unlike the one found on the C63 sedan, along with a single-bar grille, more pronounced side skirts, and a rear bumper that integrates an aerodynamic diffuser flanked by the usual four-exit exhaust system. Larger wheels engulfed with meatier tires should also be a part of the package, while a petite spoiler should adorn the hood of the trunk.

Interior

Since not even the C-Class Cabriolet has been caught with a non-camouflaged interior it is difficult to speculate how many differences will the model have compared with the sedan variant, but there shouldn’t be too many anyway. Despite having similar exterior measurements, the C-Class Coupe interior may be a little more cramped, especially in terms of rear-passenger space, but the overall interior volume should increase compared with the first generation. Since Mercedes-Benz wants to clearly differentiate its smallest coupe from its larger brothers, the model is expected to come with a hidden B-pillar that won’t give it the same classy look as the E-Class Coupe or S-Class Coupe.

Drivetrain

Also based on the new MRA (Modular Rear Architecture) platform, the upcoming C63 Coupe will shed quite a lot of weight compared with the first C63 AMG Coupe, mostly thanks to the intensive use of aluminum in its underpinnings. Just like the sedan, it will come at first with two variants of the new M177 V-8, with the same 4.0-liter displacement and “hot-vee” positioning of its two turbochargers. The “base” version will come with 476 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque, while the C63 S Coupe model will offer 510 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque.

As the car should be a tad lighter than the sedan, the 0-to-62-mph acceleration time may shed 0.1 seconds for each variant, translating into just four seconds for the AMG C63 Coupe and 3.9 seconds for the C63 S Coupe. These times are obviously speculative, but the same thing happened with the S63 AMG Coupe compared with its sedan version, and would also make the two AMG models slightly faster in a straight line than its main rival, the BMW M4.

Prices

With the current C63 AMG coupe starting at a MSRP of $63,000, it is expected that its replacement shouldn’t cross the $65,000 barrier, or at least by much. That is arguably a lot of money for the smallest Mercedes-Benz coupe in AMG trim, but keep in mind that it would be a similar price with its biggest competitor, the BMW M4, which starts at $64,200.

Despite offering two fewer cylinders and using an interior engine sound augmented by the audio system, the BMW BMW M4 is still very much part of the big league, many seeing it as the benchmark of its segment in terms of on-track performance. Paranoid regarding the brands fuel-economy average, the M4 switched form the naturally aspirated, high-revving V8 of its predecessor to a twin-turbocharged inline-six with a displacement of 3.0 liters. Despite this, the Bavarian uber-coupe is actually slightly thirstier than the Mercedes-AMG C63 and even the C63 S, making for the restriction on number of cylinders seem a bit unnecessary form this point of view.

Nevertheless the M4 comes with a healthy amount of performance thanks to its lower weight, meatier tires and its 425 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque. As a bonus compared with the upcoming C 63 Coupe, the Bimmers also offers a manual transmission option, which is bound to please the ever-shrinking amount of purists out there.

Lexus RC F

With an exterior look that is clearly part of the “love it or hate it” crowd, the RC F has no direct predecessor, with Lexus developing the model from a clean sheet. The model is powered by an old-school, naturally-aspirated, 5.0-liter V-8 that can switch from Otto to the Atkinson cycle in order to offer a better fuel economy than you would expect. Still, despite the intention, the Lexus RC F actually comes a bit short in the performance department, as the car weighs as much as the recently unveiled and much larger GS F, while its power figures are obviously down on its rivals.

Its high-revving V-8 is good for 467 horsepower and 389 pound feet of torque, and comes paired exclusively to an eight-speed automatic transmission from Aisin. Those numbers are only good enough for a naught-to-62-mph time of 4.5 seconds, which would have been enough back in 2010 to battle the Germans, but not today. Starting at $62,400, the RC F is not exactly a bargain offer either, leaving its controversial looks as the only major reason for choosing one.

Conclusion

There are plenty of unknowns regarding the future Mercedes-AMG C63 Coupe, most of them revolving its overall exterior and interior looks, but what is known for sure is that should be one hell of a performer. Along with the Lexus RC Lexus RC F it will be the only performance coupe in its segment that is still faithful to the V-8 formula, while also bringing much improved fuel economy figures compared with its predecessor. Personally, I don’t think that it will be launched as soon as the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show, with a 2016 reveal being more likely, but in non-AMG trim we should definitely see it this year.
