Mark Webber Goes Off Track in Porsche 911 GT3 Cup to Promote Safety: Video

Drivers are known to have a lot of dangerous habits behind the steering wheel, but texting while driving has gained a lot of traction recently, mostly because of the popularity of smartphones. While there’s nothing particularly bad about being able to communicate faster and easier, texting while driving is very harmful, as it leads to increased distraction.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, distracted drivers cause more than 20 percent of all fatal crashes in the United States, which accounts for more than 3,000 deaths and nearly half a million people wounded. As a result, the U.S. government has launched several campaigns to raise awareness over the dangers of texting while driving, while also banning hand-held phone use while driving in most states.

Porsche has recently joined this global safety effort with its own campaign against texting while driving. But, unlike other manufacturers, the Germans did it in a cool way, making use of their rich motorsport heritage and one of the most talented racing drivers out there. I’m talking about Mark Webber, former F1 pilot and current Porsche factory driver, who was given a 911 GT3 Cup and a race track to prove why texting behind the steering wheel is a bad idea.

In this short ad, Webber keeps losing control of the race car as text message alert sounds distract him from holding a proper racing line. The video concludes with a shamed Webber walking toward his disappointed pit crew. The message is simple: “Even the best can’t text and drive. That’s why you shouldn’t do it.” Sure, not many of us are driving Porsche 911s on a daily basis, but you shouldn’t be texting behind the wheel regardless of what kind of vehicle you drive.
