“I’ve learned from experience that nothing is ever done until it’s done in this sport, so I won’t be taking anything for granted going into the weekend,” Hamilton said.

“I’m going into this next race with the same approach I’ve had all year. There are four races left for me to get this Championship tied up and as long as it’s done by the time I cross the line in Abu Dhabi that’s what really counts.”

The 30-year-old’s team boss, Toto Wolff, said Hamilton is within “touching distance” while team-mate Nico Rosberg has a “mountain to climb”.

Rosberg is 73 points adrift and if he scores two less than Hamilton on Sunday then he will be racing just for pride in the remaining three rounds.

“With four races left and a big gap to Lewis, it’s clear that the title is a long shot for me now,” Rosberg said. “But it’s not in me to give up or back down, so I’ll be pushing flat out to the end and hopefully having some fun out there in the final few rounds this year.”
