As the paddock gathered for the US Grand Prix at the Circuit of the Americas
in Austin, Texas, Bianchi’s Marussia
team were missing, in administration, as are Caterham. Both of their
makeshift team huts have been left empty.
Bianchi sustained life-threatening head injuries after colliding with a
recovery tractor in the rain-soaked Japanese Grand Prix earlier this month.
The Frenchman suffered a severe diffuse axonal injury.
His condition has prompted a fresh debate around safety in Formula One, the
effects of which will be felt this weekend in Austin. On Friday, after
practice, stewards will try a “speed limit” system to slow down drivers
during double-waved yellow flags. Bianchi crushed under such conditions
after Adrian Sutil went off the circuit in Suzuka and hit the barriers.
