The Chicago Blackhawks announced the 38-year-old would play no part in their season, calling it “a significant loss.”

Hossa, who was born in Slovakia, has been a crucial part of a Blackhawks team that has won three Stanley Cups in six years.

Widely considered to be one of the best defensive forwards of his generation, the Slovak had 19 goals and 26 assists for 45 points last season.

Blackhawks general manager, Stan Bowman, paid homage to Hossa ability to cope with the condition throughout his career.
