Tech giant Google is adding yet another page to its involvement in the auto industry by showcasing a concept Android system on a Maserati Ghibli 
during it’s annual I/O 2016 conference.
Dieter Bohn of The Verve managed to get an up-close look at the concept Android system, which can be accessed through a massive portrait-oriented touchscreen display that takes up all of the space on the Ghibli’ s center console. According to Google, the purpose of this prototype is to showcase the future of what its Android platform can do for cars. Considering that Android Auto is already available today, this prototype is probably several versions higher than that. A big part of this new prototype is to integrate a majority of the Ghibli’s functions into the Android system, essentially turning the operating system into the car’s brain, controlling even the simplest of functions like the power windows.
It’s a big step up from what’s currently available in the market and if the technology comes to pass, a day could come when a lot of cars cabin systems – possibly more – will be powered by the Android system. It’s an interesting thought and one that could be a big part of the next evolution of the auto industry.
