“George has quite a big, cult following on Twitter. He is quite amusing, though I do have to call him about it,” says Gary. “Less so now. He’s totally different in real life. He’s quite quiet and timid.”
Does he feel guilty that his fame has put them in the public eye? “Subconsciously, psychologically, I don’t know how it has affected them in different ways over the years, but obviously it is something you have to bear in mind. And they have to realise they are of interest, through no fault of their own.”
When his second marriage, to underwear model Danielle Bux, 36, ended earlier this year, it automatically became front page news for the tabloids. “Obviously, when you know you are going through something personal which you know is going to become public, it makes it quite difficult, and it becomes a weight on your shoulders until it is out there and it’s all done.”
