At this stage the plan suggested will work as follows.
Qualifying one
16 minutes in length
After seven minutes, the slowest driver is eliminated
Every 90 seconds thereafter the slowest driver is eliminated until the chequered flag
Seven drivers are eliminated with 15 progressing to qualifying two
Qualifying two
15 minutes in length
After six minutes, the slowest driver is eliminated
Every 90 seconds thereafter the slowest driver is eliminated until the chequered flag
Seven drivers are eliminated, with eight progressing to qualifying three, the final part of the session
Qualifying three
14 minutes in length
After five minutes, the slowest driver is eliminated
Every 90 seconds thereafter the slowest driver is eliminated until the chequered flag
Two drivers are left in the final 90 seconds to battle for pole position
The proposal needs to be ratified at a meeting of the World Motor Sport Council on March 4.
