“But trying to raise £75,000 for Newman School has proved much more difficult because it means so much to me.”
Matthews is confident of raising the money needed to fund a soft playground and specialised equipment for the school.
“Being doubted by Facebook has helped me stay motivated. I know there’s a lot more money due to come in.”
While the majority of Matthews’ marathons were ran in South Yorkshire, he also completed two 26.2 mile routes in Rotherham’s twin town of St-Quentin in France.
Matthews a retired boxer, used to run a steel construction company and has taken on other gruelling challenges in recent years.
Back in 2012, at the age of 71, Matthews also ran 150 miles in 36 hours. He has also successfully completed a 100km race across the Sahara Desert.
