Brad Keselowski may have dominated the Coke Zero 400 over the weekend, but his peerless performance wasn’t what everybody was talking about after the race. That distinction went to the massive car wreck started by Jamie McMurray, which took out a staggering 22 cars in one fell swoop.
The accident occurred in the 90th lap of the race and by the time the light turned back to green to signal the resumption of the race, it was already the 101st lap and there were only 23 cars in contention. The list of drivers that got involved in the accident reads like a who’s-who of the NASCAR driver’s list. For one, the entire Hendrick Motorsports cars were all part of the accident, including Jimmie Johnson, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Kasey Kahne, and Chase Elliot. Danica Patrick also found herself in the grass, as did McMurray, Martin Truex Jr., Matt Kenseth, Paul Menard, Ryan Newman, Chris Buescher, Regan Smith, Reed Sorenson, Matt DiBenedetto, and Brian Scott, who somehow found his car straddling the hood of Kevin Harvick’s car as a result of the pileup.
Keselowski eventually won the race, with Kyle Busch finishing second and Trevor Bayne rounding out the top three. It’s a tremendous result for the Team Penske driver and a history-making one at that considering that it’s the 100th race he has won with the team.
