Winter might be almost over, but Volkswagen is squeezing some last minute cold-weather testing for its updated Amarok pickup truck. Our spy photographer was able to snap several quality pictures of Amarok test mules as they trudged through springtime slush in the Swedish countryside.

The mules wore light camouflage to cover an updated front nose. Other than that, the trucks appear nearly identical to the current Amarok. The truck saw its latest update in 2015, so the updated truck we see here will likely debut no earlier than the 2018 model year.

While the front is the only body section covered, VW could easily roll out an updated rear, or at least new taillights to freshen the Amarok’s hindquarters. Such modifications could easily happen before the truck’s official debut. Both Dual Cab and Single Cab configurations were spotted testing, so this update will undoubtedly span the entire Amarok lineup.

Exterior

VW’s attempt at camouflage doesn’t appear very genuine. The minimal coverings on the front fascia allow for generous viewing of a “hidden” front end. The new fascia appears to have a larger lower grille section with a body-colored horizontal bar placed midway up. The thin upper grille appears to be the same size as before, though it only has one horizontal bar rather than the two-bar set-up seen on the current truck. The fog light area is covered fairly well, so its hard to see what VW has done. We’ve bet on a new appearance, and even perhaps some LED units to match the LED daytime running lights up top.

Speaking of DRLs and headlights, VW will likely give the Amarok the latest VW look with new lights, though this tester seems to be running the current setup. Beyond those changes, and the aftermarket off-road light bar, this Amarok seems basically unchanged.

Interior

Our photographer wasn’t able to get shots of the Amarok’s interior, but we can still speculate on VW’s plans. Expect the pickup to carry VW’s latest interior design theme with an updated infotainment system, gauge cluster, and dashboard design. The changes won’t likely be drastic, though they should keep the truck fresh for a few more years.

We’ll keep you posted when we know more.

Drivetrain

Volkswagen Amarok

It’s impossible to spot any changes to the drivetrain from these photos, but we suspect the Amarok will continue with its current engine and transmission offerings. VW will could boost power and efficiency, but it’s unlike we’ll see an all-new engine lineup.

The current Amarok offers a 2.0-liter four-cylinder TDI that makes 138 horsepower and propels the truck to 62 mph in a leisurely 13.5 seconds. Those waning a bit more pep should choose the twin-turbocharged version, called the BiTDI, that makes 178 horsepower and does the 62 mph sprint in a somewhat quicker 11 seconds. Obviously neither engine is well suited for speed, but what they lack in performance power, they make up for in low-end torque. This makes the Amarok a decent competitor to the Toyota Hilux, Ford Ranger, and Nissan NP.

Prices

Volkswagen has yet to announce anything about the updated Amarok, including price. Once the truck has debuted, we’ll bring you updated information. Till that time, we’d suspect VW will increase the Amarok’s price slightly over the current truck.

Competition

Toyota Hilux

Toyota Hilux

The Hilux, like the Amarok, is not offered in the U.S. We do have a version of it though with the Tacoma. Still, the Hilux is its own truck with a beefier attitude and a stronger back for work. Rather than a lifestyle truck as the Tacoma is, the Hilux is a hard-working brute that offers big capability in a midsize package.

Power comes from a wide variety of engines, both gasoline and diesel, depending on region. Toyota’s 2.8-liter four-cylinder turbodiesel with 177 horsepower is the closest competitor to the Amarok’s engine options.

Ford Ranger

Ford Ranger

The Ranger is Ford’s global midsize truck sold round the world – except North America. (At least for now) The truck is a tough beast that gives the Hilux a run for its money, with outstanding off-road capabilities, powerful engine options, and even a high-ranging Limited trim line. Power comes from three engine choice: a 2.5-liter I-5, a 2.2-liter I-4 turbodiesel, and a 3.2-liter turbodiesel. The truck can be had in single and double cab styles.

Both the Ranger and Hilux last received a refresh for the 2015 model year.

Conclusion

Volkswagen Amarok

This refresh appears to be a mild one for the Amarok. With just a new nose, the truck will likely carry over mostly unchanged, despite a new face. Beyond that, it’s hard to draw a conclusion simply based on these photos. Once we hear more new on the truck’s upcoming refresh, we’ll be sure to bring updates. Stay tuned for more.

For now, the Amarok is a solid contender in the global midsize pickup category. Sadly VW does not seem interested in bringing the Amarok into the U.S. – especially after the U.S. EPA is after billions in fines for VW’s TDI issues. For now (and probably forever more) we’ll just watch from the sidelines as VW updates its popular pickup.
