The FIA has updated the sporting rules for the coming season, making clearer one point that was bound to raise problems for the drivers: The new rule about not being able to return to the racing line after defending a position. In fact, the drivers can return to the racing line after defending their position once, but they must leave a car’s width of space to the edge of the track going into a corner. It still sounds to me like there is room for disagreement in the rules and penalties that will be handed out this season for unfair maneuvers. But such are the difficulty of making sporting rules for the pinnacle of auto racing, where drivers and teams fight for every inch of the track and every advantage possible.
