Subaru took the occasion of the Tokyo auto show to debut this Cross Sport Design Concept, which appears to be a jacked-up BRZ wagon. To our eyes, it even looks like there’s a bit of Mazda 3 in there, too. Or maybe it’s just the world’s most bad-ass Volvo C30. By Subaru. Whatever it evokes, there’s no denying that it’s seriously cool.

The 169.3-inch-long hatchback—2.6 inches longer than a BRZ—is Subaru’s attempt at producing something that truly marries sport and utility, and features a two-piece deckled that opens to reveal a wood-paneled load floor. Subaru being ever-practical Subaru, the company goes out of its way to boast how easy it is to get into and out of the concept.

- Instrumented Test: 2014 Subaru Forester 2.5i Touring
- First Drive: 2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek Hybrid
There are no details as to what would power such a vehicle—we’ll hazard a guess and say the BRZ’s 2.0-liter flat-four—or how serious Subaru is about putting the Cross Sport Design into production, although the company does state that it sees this type of vehicle as “the next trend in urban SUVs.”
