It has been a worrying two days for the three Renault-powered teams in Jerez.
While the four Mercedes engine teams completed a total of 212 laps on
Wednesday, with 97 for Mercedes Nico Rosberg, the Renault teams managed just
19.

Renault’s engine chief Rob White admitted after the opening day of testing
that the situation needed to improve dramatically.

“I honestly expected there to be more laps on the board right now, but without
real up close knowledge of what has been going on in the garage I don’t know
what has been happening,” he said.

“It is kind of a no brainer, but the pace has to ramp up substantially over
the coming days and week.”

Jenson Button ended the day fastest in his McLaren with a 1 min 24.1 sec lap,
completing a total of 43 laps.

He also carried a tribute to his father John Button, who died earlier this
month, on his helmet in Jerez.
