After the Pirelli tire director earlier in the week said Michael Schumacher was a favorite to win in Valencia, the German today at the track during a small press conference in his Mercedes motor home said he doubted he was likely to win the race.

“I’m a little bit reluctant to say we are in a very strong position here,” he said. “We hope to be in a good position but to call it a victory, that would be too optimistic from my point of view.”

Paul Hembery of Pirelli had said that because the Valencia street circuit is similar to the Monaco track, he thought Schumacher had a good chance. The German had scored pole position in Monaco, but had to move back down the grid with a penalty from the previous race. Valencia’s track is not the only similarity to Monaco, as this Spanish seaside town with a yacht-filled harbor tries to imitate the glamor and glitz of the Monaco race too….
