“I’m a big fan of MotoGP and I wish we in Formula One could get closer to the
drivers like they do in MotoGP.

“We have become a bit sterile in many ways in Formula One. But we cannot put
drivers at risk. If it had been done in a safer manner then it might have
been viewed differently, but this was potentially very dangerous. You can’t
have cars parked in the middle of a corner.”

Warwick felt that part of the reason fans were so irate was that they did not
see the Red
Bull
driver running on to the track, or both the Mercedes
cars of Lewis
Hamilton
and Nico Rosberg swerving to avoid Alonso’s stationary Ferrari.

Hamilton later said that he had been “really shocked” to find the Ferrari in
his path and added that there was a risk he could have run Webber over
trying to avoid a collision.

Warwick also pointed out that stewards’ hands were to a certain extent tied
with regard to the choice of penalty. It is understood that the drivers
themselves voted earlier this season for reprimands rather than fines in
such cases.

The FIA is now likely to advise the drivers not to stop to pick up other
drivers in such circumstances, which is certain to annoy fans of the sport
who have enjoyed such moments down the years.
