Hamilton said he was thankful for the three-week gap before the start of the
European season in Barcelona on May 13.

“I think for us we need that gap. We have a lot of work to do. There is no
quick fix. We really have to make some big improvements to the car because
the qualifying pace is there but the race pace, at least today, was miles
off.”

With in-season testing usually banned, the Mugello test represents a rare
opportunity for Paffett and Turvey to drive the MP4-27. However, it is
understood McLaren have no problem with Hamilton stepping in if that is what
he wants.

Button said he would not be at Mugello and would instead be doing a demo run
in downtown Budapest on May 1.
