General Motors‘ ignition switch recall just got a whole lot bigger.
The American automaker is expanding the recall to another 971,000 vehicles, 824,000 of which are in the U.S. The added vehicles cover the 2008-2010 Saturn Ion and Sky, Pontiac G5 and Solstice and the Chevrolet HHR. In addition, the 2008-2011 Chevrolet Cobalt has been added, bringing the total of recalled vehicles in the U.S. to about 2.2 million.
“We’re taking no chances with safety” said CEO Mary Barra said in a statement. “Trying to locate several thousand switches in a population of 2.2 million and distributed to thousands of retailers isn’t practical. Out of an abundance of caution, we are recalling the rest of the model years.”

Last month, GM announced a recall on 1.37 million vehicles in the U.S. with the ignition switch defect that has been linked to 34 crashes and 12 deaths. In today’s announcement of the recall, GM stated that it was not aware of any injuries or crashes involving the late-model cars.
