The FIA announced the surprise move in December, with drivers able to choose a
number of their preference between two and 99.
German Nico Hulkenberg, who returns to Force India after a hugely impressive
2013 Sauber, has the slightly daunting privilege of taking the sport’s most
iconic number, 27, made famous by Gilles Villeneuve, and then driven by
Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost among others.
The number 13, which has been dormant in Formula One for some time, for
obvious reasons, has been taken by Pastor Maldonado. The irony will not be
lost on those drivers who have had on-track encounters with the Venezuelan
in recent seasons.
Lewis Hamilton, in his second season with Mercedes in 2014, takes 44.
