Volkswagen is set to claim the sales crown in China for the first time in nine years.

For the past nine years, General Motors has been the best-selling foreign automaker in the world’s largest auto market, but all that will change in 2013 as Volkswagen has about a 70,000-vehicle lead through the first 11 months of the year. Both automakers have sold over three-million vehicles in China this year.

Even more impressive is that Volkswagen believes it could sell more vehicles in China since it has a capacity problem in the country, according to Jochem Heizmann, president and CEO of Volkswagen’s China operations. The Audi brand is also the top-selling premium brand in China.

The German automaker will invest $25 billion through 2018 to expand its operations in China.
