Customers should wait if they are about to buy a new diesel-powered Volkswagen sedan or coupe because a new turbo diesel will replace the current engine later this year.
The company confirmed timing today for the introduction of its next generation turbocharged diesel four-cylinder engine. The EA288 powerplant will initially arrive in the second half of 2014 in the Jetta, Passat, Beetle and Golf for the 2015 model year bringing improvements in refinement, output, efficiency and emissions. Following its introduction in those four models, it will eventually replace the 2.0-liter diesel engines in all Volkswagen and Audi models sold in the U.S.
Highlights for the new mill include an output rating of 150 hp – 10 more than the model it replaces – and 236 lb-ft of torque. Volkswagen also integrated the intercooler with the intake manifold for improved throttle response and the exhaust manifold into the engine head. The second change ought to help it reach optimal operating temperatures faster in cold weather, which will help heat the cabin sooner and offer better fuel efficiency. Other efficiency-enhancing changes include low-friction bearings for the camshaft and balancer shafts and piston rings with less pre-tension.
Volkswagen emphasized today that this is an all-new engine for the company, saying all it shares with the previous engine is its bore spacing. In the global market, the EA288 engine family will range in displacement from 1.6- to 2.0-liters although the U.S. market will only see the largest of those.
For U.S. customers, the arrival of the new engine will also coincide with Volkswagen’s launch of the new seventh-generation Golf, which rides on the brand’s modular MQB platform.
