On Monday, we presented this week’s shifter and asked you to identify the make and model of the vehicle whence it came. Although several of you noticed this shifter’s Volkswagen / Audi origins, no one correctly identified it as the 1986 Volkswagen Quantum Syncro’s five-speed.
The Quantum Syncro pictured here is from our July 1986 issue. Cobbled together from a host of Volkswagen and Audi parts, the Quantum was powered by Audi’s 115-hp inline-five and utilized that brand’s four-wheel-drive system. Delectably, this hardware was fitted to a handsome and practical wagon body—we sure are suckers for wagons. The Syncro’s performance was rather 1980s, however, and we recorded a so-so 10.6-second 0–60 time and a 103-mph top speed.
