The positive for Mercedes is the level of disappointment currently being
experienced within the team at such results in Spa and Monza when at the
start of the season no-one believed their success this season was possible.

In the three years prior to this season since returning to F1,
the Brackley-based marque had scored just one pole, one race win and five
additional podium finishes. This year Hamilton and Rosberg have managed
between them eight poles, three wins and four other podium places.

“After so many pole positions and podiums, and with three wins, it’s
still a fantastic improvement on last year,” added Wolff. “You
can’t expect to be up there all the time. It’s a learning process. We know
what we’ve done wrong over the last two weekends, and it’s a matter of
improving.

“Overall, I’m still very satisfied, although there has still been some
pain on a Sunday afternoon lately. But we saw at Monza the pace of the car
was really good, with much less degradation than some of the cars running in
front of us. We’ve some new parts for Singapore and Korea, so we’ll keep
pushing, and trying to do better.”

Wolff has conceded, however, with Mercedes 107 points behind Red Bull in the
constructors’ championship, hopes of landing that title are now “pretty
unrealistic”.
