But asked whether it would be his last, Button said: “Not necessarily.
Probably two years ago I would have said definitely, and even last year I
probably would have said definitely. But time flies and when I decide I want
to retire from Formula One I think will end up going back and back.
“Hopefully it will be my decision. So it (the new contract) might be [my
last] or it might not be. I don’t know.”
It is the enjoyment factor that is playing the biggest part in the 31-year-old
believing in his longevity in the sport.
Button concedes he is driving better now than he did at the start of 2009 when
he won six out of the first seven races en route to his title triumph with
Brawn GP.
Such happiness has without doubt helped to extend his career as he added: “It’s
a lot longer than I thought it was going to be five years ago.
“You’ve got to think you’re lucky to have found something that you enjoy,
something you are good at and don’t take for granted.
“Because when you step away from what you love doing, and what you have
been doing for 23 years, I think it’s going to be a big shock to the system.
“I’m really enjoying where I am at the moment, and hopefully this feeling
will continue. If it does I might be racing for a lot more years.”
