“It’s my decision at race weekends. I don’t actually want people at the races.
Sometimes it’s good to have people there, sometimes it’s not. At the moment
I prefer to be alone.”

Asked if he agreed with his father that drivers need someone to turn to when
controversies erupt, such as they did in Singapore and in Monaco earlier
this summer, Hamilton said he had never needed a shoulder to cry on.
“Never,” he said. “I’ve never needed someone to speak to in the evenings. If
I wanted to speak to anyone I would give my missus [girlfriend Nicole
Scherzinger] a call and speak to her. At the end of the day I’ve got people
like my father I can pick up the phone and speak to if I want to speak to
someone.

“I just deal with it myself and I have a lot of support from my management
team and family. If I have a bad day the last thing I want to do is come
home and explain myself. I think I’ve earned the right by where I am now to
not have to explain myself to anyone.”
