“Winning in Monza must be a great feeling, but I would say it’s not one
that I enjoy standing on the podium at.”
“The tifosi are there to support Ferrari. They’re not there to support us.”
The traditional ending to an Italian Grand Prix results in many thousands of
fans making their way on to the circuit to watch the podium ceremony,
resulting in a sea of red.
For many drivers the sight should be one to behold, but Button added: “Yeah,
I don’t know. I don’t like people booing. I’m not used to football crowds.”
“But Monza’s a great place and the last three years there I’ve been
second, just missing out on a victory a couple of times, so it would be
great to win there.”
“Winning in Spa was definitely amazing. I’ve won in Monaco, I’ve won in
Suzuka, and now I’ve won in Spa.”
“Those three stand out for me as being very special circuits. The only
one missing is Silverstone, my home grand prix.”
“Before I end my career I’d like to at least be on the podium, or
hopefully win there.”
In cutting the gap to championship leader Fernando Alonso in Spa to 63 points
on the back of the 14th win of his F1 career, Button unsurprisingly heads to
Monza “full of motivation”.
In scoring more points than any other driver from the last three races Button
has finally got his act together following a horrid run when he struggled
with the car, collecting seven points from six races.
Button added: “It was the perfect weekend for me.
“It’s not only put me back in contention for the drivers’ title, but it’s
shown we have a car that can definitely fight for the constructors’ title.
“It’ll be great to be back in the car so soon after the victory.
“Monza is one of the greatest circuits in the world and our car seems to
be particularly well suited to high-speed circuits, so I’m optimistic we’ll
be competitive again this weekend.
“For some reason, the car we’ve brought to Monza in the last two seasons
has been really well suited to me.
“I’ve really been able to work with the balance and enjoyed pushing the
car. The success we had with a low-downforce configuration at Spa also gives
us cause for optimism.
“As I’ve finished second here in both my previous races for McLaren, I’ll
definitely be going for the win this weekend.”
