compact-crossovers

Mainstream midsize sedans have been the most popular car category for 10 years in a row, but that streak might be in jeopardy.

IHS Automotive data based on Polk new vehicle registrations show that in the first two months of this year, U.S. drivers purchased more compact crossovers than any other type of vehicle, car or light truck. The compact crossover utility vehicle segment has captured 16.27 percent of the market through February while the traditional midsize market is at 16.16 percent.

If the trend continues for the rest of the year, it would be the first time in recent memory that a car segment did not lead the industry in sales. Leading the way for the crossover segment through two months of 2014 is the new Nissan Rogue, Jeep Cherokee, Subaru Forester and Mazda’s CX-5.
