Hamilton
deservedly occupies that status, with three victories to
his name. But the formbook was turned on its head as Rosberg brilliantly
swept to pole position ahead of his Mercedes
team-mate for the Canadian Grand Prix.

On this occasion there was nothing to dispute and Hamilton was gracious in
defeat. If we needed any confirmation that the World Championship is to be
an epic tussle, this was it.

The Circuit Gilles Villeneuve is supposed to be a Lewis Hamilton circuit,
making Rosberg’s seventh career pole a significant feather in his cap. The
German rocked up in what is effectively Hamilton’s backyard and beat him.

It was a stunning effort, setting up what should be an enthralling race.
