Lewis Hamilton’s tweeting has landed him in hot water again but this time it
is very different. Posting team telemetry on Twitter was a serious error of
judgment, whereas this week was about a driver giving his followers an
honest (if ill-advised) reaction to something which he felt to be true at
the time. It did not help his team, his team-mate or himself, but it was
honest. We have come so far down the road of monitoring what our sportsmen
say that when they are mildly controversial we jump on them. And yet we
yearn for the days of ‘real characters’ like James Hunt. Perhaps Lewis
should be applauded.
